New emissions cap regulations: Where’s the transparency?
The recent announcement of new emissions cap regulations in Canada raises serious questions about the true impact of this policy on our economy and its potential impact on affordability for Canadian families, particularly women. While Canada Powered by Women supports innovations by industry to lower emissions, we are deeply concerned about the lack of clear information surrounding these regulations, transparency of the implications to our prosperity as a nation, and the limited opportunities for Canadian women to contribute to regulatory development.
Engaged women across Canada have consistently told us they connect how energy policies impact their lives — their household budgets, their job security and their future. Today’s announcement underscores the urgent need for greater transparency and open dialogue about the implications of energy policy beyond environmental impact. Our research from this spring shows only 37 per cent of women surveyed are aware of the concept of an emissions cap in Canada. What will these regulations mean for the cost of groceries, transportation and heating our homes? How will they affect job opportunities and economic growth now and in the long term? These are critical questions that deserve clear answers.
Canada Powered by Women will continue advocating for our governments to listen to Canadian women’s voices. We are committed to ensuring women’s perspectives are heard and considered in the development of policies that shape our energy future. We will be taking a closer look at the emissions cap and actively engaging with the government and our community of women on this issue in the coming weeks and months.
